鍋（なべ）を食（た）べます/ You eat a POT?!( metonymy )

さて、先日バンコクは急に3日間ほど寒くなってびっくりしました。
朝の気温が18度ぐらいだったんですよ。

Well, recently I was surprised when the temperature in Bangkok suddenly got cold for about 3 days. The morning temperatures were around 18 degrees.
寒い季節に食べたくなるものといえばなんだと思いますか。
焼肉？ラーメン？おでん？
わたしは鍋が食べたくなるんです。
What do you think of when speaking of things that you want to eat in the cold season?
Grilled meat? Ramen? Oden?
I want to eat "NABE".
鍋（なべ Nabe） a pot
「鍋を食べます」というと、ちょっとびっくりしましたか。
これは換喩（metonymy）といって、近い関係のものを他のもので表現しています。
Were you a little surprised that I said, “I want to eat NABE.”?
This is a kind of “kanyu” or metonymy (a figure of speech), one word that has a very similar meaning can be used for another.
「鍋の中にはいっている食べ物（料理）を食べます」ということですが、
「鍋を食べます」言うとほとんどの人は「鍋料理を食べます」ということだと分かりますね。
If you say “I eat the pot” (nabe wo tabemasu) and most people understand “I eat hot pot cooking” which means “I eat the food (cooking) that is in the pot.”
ですから、鍋は調理器具でもあるし、料理でもあります。
So, pot is the cookware and also the cuisine.
さて、このような換喩（metonymy）は、他にも色々使われています。 Well, “kanyu” (metonymy) similar to this is also used for a variety other things.
例えば、「わたしは村上春樹が好きです」というのはどうですか。
みなさん私は村上春樹さんのことが好きで、結婚したい！と思っていると思いますか。
もちろんわたしも村上春樹さんのファンですが、この場合は「村上春樹の作品が好きです」ということだとわかりますよね。
For example, what about "I like Haruki Murakami".
Everyone, I like Haruki Murakami, I want to get married to him! Do you think that thought?
Of course, I am also a fan of Haruki Murakami, but I think you know this case is to be referred to as "I like the works of Haruki Murakami."
ところで、わたしの大好きな食べ物「たこ焼き」も換喩なんですよ。
分かりますか。 By the way, my favorite food, takoyaki "octopus balls" it’s also a metonymy.
