もったいない MOTTAINAI

私はレッスンで英語を使う時があるのですが、
その時に一言で英訳できない日本語の単語がいくつかあります。
今日はその中の一つ、「もったいない」について紹介したいと思います。

I have used English in lessons but there are many Japanese words that can’t be translated to a single phrase in English.
One of them that I would like to introduce today is "mottainai".
まず、辞書を見てみると、次のように説明しています。

今日は、よく会話で使われる1番目の使い方を例文で理解して、会話で使えるようにしましょう。
Today let’s figure out the first usage that is often used in conversation with example sentences and then be able to use it in conversation.

今日は山や海にいってのんびりしたいけど、仕事があってどこにもいけない。こんなにいい天気なのにもったいないなあ。
Today I want to take it easy in the mountains or sea but I can’t go anywhere because I have work to do. It’s a waste to have such good weather.

A:「あれ？そのカメラ捨てちゃうの？」
B:「うん。あまり使ってないからきれいなんだけど、モデルが古くて修理できないんだ」
A:「そっか。もったいないね。」
A:Oh no! Are you throwing away that camera?
B:Yup. It looks new because I’ve hardly used it but it’s an old model that can’t be repaired.
A:Is that so? What a waste.

A：「遊園地の無料入場券をもらったから、明日一緒にいかない？」
B:「うん、行きたい！」
A:「あ、ちょっとまって、有効期限が今日までって書いてある…」
B:「え！？じゃ、明日はもう使えないね。もったいない。」
A:I got free amusement park tickets so do you want to go with me tomorrow?
B:Yeah, I want to.
A:Uh, wait a sec, it says they’re valid until today.
B:What! Well, we can’t use them tomorrow. That’s a waste.

太っちゃって、この服はもう着られなくなっちゃったけど、
捨（す）てるのはもったいないから妹に着てもらおうかなと思ってる。
I put on weight. I can’t wear these clothes any more.
It’s a waste to throw them out so I think I’ll have my younger sister wear them.

レストランで料理を待っている時間がもったいないので、その間もスマートフォンを使って仕事をしています。
It’s a waste of time to wait for the food in a restaurant so I’ll do some work on my cell phone.

ところで、この日本語特有の「もったいない」を世界に広めている女性がいらっしゃいました。
実はその方は日本人ではなく、2004年にノーベル平和賞を受賞されたケニア人のワンガリ・マータイさんという方でした。
マータイさんは2011年に亡くなられましたが、彼女が始めた「MOTTAINAI」キャンペーンは、今も日本の「もったいない」の精神と言葉をキーワードに広まっていっています。もし、興味があればウェブサイト「MOTTAINAI」をチェックしてみてください。
By the way, it was a woman who spread this special Japanese word “MOTTAINAI” across the entire globe.
In fact, this person was not Japanese , she was a Kenyan named Wangari Maathai who was awarded the Nobel Peace prize in 2004.
