日本語のローマ字 子音編 The Roman Alphabet in Japanese language <Consonants>

前回はローマ字と英語の母音の違いについて書きました。
今日は、気を付けたい子音の発音について書きたいと思います。

In the last installment I wrote about the differences between vowels in English and Japanese Roman Alphabet. Today I would like to write about pronunciation of consonants that I want you to be careful about.
実は日本ではローマ字を小学校の4年生で勉強します。
そして日本で使われているローマ字には2種類あり、ひとつは訓令式、もうひとつはヘボン式で、おもに地図や標識などに使われているのはヘボン式です。
Actually, in Japan we study the Roman Alphabet in 4th grade elementary school.
Thus in Japan 2 types of Roman Alphabets are used, one is the official kana romanization system and the other is the Hepburn system of romanization. The Hepburn system is mainly used for maps and signs etc.
英語を話す人にとってはヘボン式の方が読みやすいかと思います。
でも、アルファベットを先に知ってしまった人にとっては難しい日本語の２つの子音の正しい発音について今日はお話ししたいと思います。
I think it’s easier to read the Hepburn system for people who speak English. However, today I would like to talk about the correct pronunciation of 2 Japanese consonants that are difficult for people who knew the alphabet previously to learning Japanese.
この記事を読んで、是非正しい発音を身につけてください。
レッスンで何度も言っていますが、文法や語彙力も大事ですけど、
会話をするのが目的であれば自然な発音はとても大事です。
Read this article and be certain to learn by heart the correct pronunciation.
I have said it many times in the lessons, grammar and vocabulary are important but if your goal is conversation then a native pronunciation is also important.
発音が不自然だと、周りの人は「あ、この人はまだ日本語の勉強を始めたばかりかな？」と推測して、簡単な文法や言葉だけで話そうとすることがよくあるからです。
If the pronunciation is not natural, then the surrounding people guess “hmm, I wonder if this person has just started learning Japanese?” and they will often try to speak only with easy grammar and words.
ですので、上級レベルのみなさんも是非この機会にご自身の発音を見直してみてください。
Therefore, by all means, please review your own pronunciation at this opportunity.

それでは、一つ目の子音「F」について見ていきましょう。
みなさんはよく「FUJI」というローマ字を見ませんか。
Well then, let’s take a look at consonant “F”.
Hasn’t everyone often seen the romanization of “FUJI”?
そう富士山（ふじさん）のFUJIですよね。でもローマ字表を見てください。
「ふ」には「hu」と「fu」がありますね。
さて！この二つ、同じように発音しますか。違いますよね。
そうです！「hu」ですよ。だから正しい発音は「huji」なんです。
日本語に英語のFの発音はありませんので、気を付けてくださいね。
It’s FUJI of Mt. Fuji, isn’t it? But please look at the Roman Alphabet chart.
There are “hu” and “fu” for 「ふ」, right?
Well! Do you pronounce these two the same? They’re different, right!
Then, which do you think Japanese people pronounce?
That’s right! It’s “hu”. So it is assured that the correct pronunciation is “huji”,
Please take care because there is no English pronunciation of “F” in Japanese.
そして、もう一つは「R」です。
これは、日本語の「らりるれろ」に使われていますけれど、
英語の「R」とは違いますよね。
え？同じだと思っていましたか。
それでは、このビデオを見てみてください。
Another one is “R”.
This is used in Japanese hiragana “RA RI RU RE RO”,
but it’s different from “R” in English.
Huh? Did you think it was the same?

As for those of you who study with me, I think you know that I’m not good at drawing pictures but today I’ll try my best to explain with a picture.
左はアルファベットのRaの発音をした時の口の中です。
On the left is the inside of the mouth when “Ra” of the Alphabet is pronounced.
右は日本語の「ら」を発音するときの口の中です。
On the right is the inside of the mouth when 「ら」in Japanese is pronounced.
どうですか。「ら」を発音するときに舌は歯茎を叩きます。叩く場所は英語のDと同じところです。
ですから英語を話す人は「Dをやわらかく」発音してみるように意識してみると簡単に発音できるかもしれません。
How is that? When pronouncing「ら」the tongue comes in contact with the gums. The point of contact is the same place as when “D” in English is pronounced.
So for the people who speak English be conscious to gently pronounce “D” and you may be able to pronounce it easily.
